It's been 33 long years since the Prince of Zamunda went to Queens to find his bride. Along the way there were rumors of a possible sequel, but nothing came of those. Until now.
It was worth the wait.
I am happy to tell you that this film is amazing! It may even be better than the first one. It is filled with cameos, laughs, and Easter eggs. (My favorite being a painting on the wall while Akeem's son is being interviewed).
Eddie Murphy proves again that he knows comedy like few others. He could have easily made sure this movie was all about him, but instead, he lets the other characters fill a lot of the space around him. This makes for a much more dynamic and interesting film. Especially when it comes to the secondary characters. For example, Wesley Snipes completely steals every scene he is in. I highly doubt Eddie would have let that happen three decades ago.
There are several new characters that give the franchise a fresh feel, but there are plenty of the original characters making returns as well. There are several times I wished I was watching this in a packed theater just to be able to enjoy the crowd reactions when one of the old favorites pops up on screen.
If you are a fan of the first film, this is a must see. If you've never seen the first one, there is no time like the present to watch both. It's already been 33 years, don't wait any longer.
