Sometimes an idea looks great on paper, but when it finally plays out it isn't very good. That is the case with THE KITCHEN. What should be an entertaining, female-empowering, 1970's mobster film turns out to be a slow, half-told story where, ultimately, it is men that are really the ones in power. The good news is that the acting is very good and the music is great (especially if you are a fan of Fleetwood Mac). Why on earth would anyone want to watch a bunch of people yell at each other about politics for nearly two hours? If that is your jam, then by all means enjoy sitting in the theater all alone for this heap of trash. I was especially disappointed because Ike Barinholtz and Tiffany Haddish are two of the best comedic actors in Hollywood right now. Unfortunately, Ike wrote and directed this like he was really trying to win a political debate with his brother rather than making something that could at least be mistaken for comedy. It's hard to believe that anyone could steal the spotlight from Kevin Hart in a movie written by him and starring him, but Tiffany Haddish isn't just anyone. She is a comedic force, and she kills it in this movie. Without Haddish this would be a fairly typical, mostly average comedy, but she raises it up a couple of notches to a film that is worth seeing in theaters.
